Markets Matter Convening: Aligning Investment in Markets to Support Forests and Rural Prosperity

by

Healthy forests require healthy industry, and healthy industry depends on viable markets. Keystone Policy Center partnered with the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities and the Society of American Foresters to plan and facilitate the Markets Matter Convening (May 2026), bringing together more than 230 leaders across industry, investment, Tribes, government, research, and nonprofits to accelerate market-based solutions for forest health, wildfire risk reduction, and rural prosperity. Discussions centered on strengthening markets for underutilized wood fiber, including small-diameter wood, manufacturing residuals, and forest residues, alongside emerging forest products, rural manufacturing and infrastructure, investment and financing opportunities, and workforce and supply chain challenges.

Keystone’s role spanned the full arc of the effort: convening and guiding a Steering Committee, conducting pre-convening regional focus groups and analysis of past and existing white papers and proceedings, and facilitating the 200+ person, three-day convening itself. The engagement culminated in a convening summary, a national action plan, and an implementation and momentum plan, deliverables now guiding the Endowment’s ongoing work with partners across the forest sector.
