Energy Forums

Energy Forums The Keystone Energy Forum is a discussion series that provides energy professionals with an informal opportunity to learn more about key issues and to talk with others working on these issues. The idea for this forum came about as a result of numerous conversations with Congressional staff, industry, environmentalists, and others who repeated several points:

Time pressures, changeover in leadership on the Hill, in the Administration and within companies and organizations as well as other factors have created a situation where networks and working relationships are not as strong as they could be.

Resource constraints require that people cover a broader array of issues and finding opportunities to learn about those issues can be challenging.

Various stakeholder groups have worked to facilitate similar efforts but tend to be identified with specific points of view, which can be troublesome.

In response, Keystone developed the concept for the Energy Forum--a two-hour session in which one or two speakers present remarks and answer questions on a topical energy issue, followed by time for discussion among participants. Keystone will join with a company and an NGO to co-host each forum.

Past Forums

March 13, 2003: The Hydrogen Agenda. The first Energy Forum was held at the Phoenix Park Hotel, and was co-hosted by General Motors and World Resources Institute. Assistant Secretary David Garman from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy spoke about the Administration's hydrogen program and agenda. Approximately 50 people participated in the discussion.

"Can CO2 Sequestration Play a Role in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions?
(From Feb. 5, 2003 Energy Forum)

Presentations:

JJ Dooley, “Carbon Capture and Sequestration as a Means for Managing Carbon Dioxide Emissions,”

Joint Global Change Research Institute and Battelle.

David G. Hawkins, “Global Warming: Time to get Started,”  Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Steve Kleespie, “Can Geologic CO2 Storage Play a Significant Role in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions?, Rio Tinto.

May 1, 2003: Underlying Principles of a Multi-Pollutant Emissions Strategy was held at the American Gas Association. The event was co-hosted by Cinergy and the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC). Mary Kenkel, Manager of Federal Affairs for Cinergy, and Kurt Waltzer, Clean Air Program Coordinator for the OEC, gave two points of view on proposed legislation to reduce power plant emissions. Approximately 35 people participated.

June 19, 2003: Key Issues in Electricity Transmission. The event was held at Edison Electric Institute, and was co-hosted by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, PJM Interconnection and International Transmission Company. Public Utilities Commissioners Dave Svanda from Michigan and Marilyn Showalter from Washington State gave two points of view on the most pressing transmission issues of the day. Approximately 35 people participated.

February 5, 2003: Can CO2 Sequestration Play a Role in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions? The event was held at the House of Representatives in a Energy and Commerce Committee hearing room, and was co-hosted by Rio Tinto, Natural Resources Defense Council, Battelle and the Joint Global Change Research Institute. Steve Kleespie, Dave Hawkins, and Jim Dooley made presentations about the important role that sequestering CO2 can play to mitigate climate change, and the need to encourage research and development into technologies that can capture CO2 from power plants and prevent it from entering the atmosphere.

Possible Future Energy Forum Topics
There are many topics of importance in this field. At the moment, Keystone is discussing the following broad topics with potential co-hosts. We welcome feedback on these or other topics.

Climate Change
(including the status of IGCC technology and geologic sequestration)

Nuclear Energy
(including the latest in technological advances)

Clean Diesel
