Wolf Management
Standards 1, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2, 5, & 6
This is one of Keystone Science School's environmental issues themes that explores not only the science pertaining to a particular environmental issue but also the social and economic implications as well. Students learn about the environmental issue of wolf management in Colorado and how to handle the possible entry of this animal into the state. Students research the topic in the field during the day and explore the social aspect of the issue in the evenings.
Students participate in a town meeting that brings together stakeholders from all sides of this issue. Each student takes on the values, beliefs and perspectives of a different stakeholder at this meeting. This meeting allows students to participate in a collaborative decision-making and conflict resolution process with their peers. There are no subject areas(s) to prioritize when choosing this theme. The curriculum for this theme is designed to meet the strands and assessment frameworks of the CDE Science Standard 3 as well as many Social Studies standards.
