2007 Home School Programs


Keystone Science School is proud to present two new programs during the week of March 26-30, 2007 specifically designed for home schooled children in Colorado . These programs will allow students, ages 10-17, to learn through hands-on lessons and to socialize with others their age.

Each program will be tailored to suit the needs and abilities of each group. Two 3-day/2-night programs will be offered during this week. Students can choose to attend one or both sessions if desired. Each program will include the following:

  • 2 nights lodging
  • 6 meals beginning with dinner on the first day
  • Cross-country ski or snowshoe equipment and instruction (weather dependent)
  • Planning Materials
  • Hands on, inquiry-based field instruction in small groups (maximum ratio1:12)
  • Interactive and fun evening programs
  • Extra clothing/gear for students in need
  • Field Journals to use throughout the program

Snow Science Exploration
March 26-28th, 2007


This program will focus on a field study of the Colorado snowpack while traveling on snowshoes or skis. Participants will examine the physical characteristics of snow and avalanches in the Colorado Rockies as well as its effect on plants, animals and people. Activities will include:

Snowpack study
Avalanche stability tests
Build your own avalanche
Winter weather investigations and demonstrations
Snow formation and metamorphism
Calculation of thermal index and water content of snowpack
Review of the scientific method

Winter Ecology Exploration
March 28-30th, 2007

This program will explore the winter world of the Rocky Mountains while traveling on snowshoes or cross country skis. Participants will learn about plants, animals and their interactions in Mountain Ecosystems. Activities will include:

Colorado mountain life zones comparisons
Animal tracking and signs
Tree and shrub identification
Animal and plant adaptation
Habitat investigations
Exploration of the abiotic and biotic
components in our ecosystems.
Review of the scientific method

Registration Details

Cost: Total costs for each 3-day program is $140 per student and $70 per adult,. Cost includes all meals, ski instruction and gear rental, field instruction and lodging. Each family participating in the program will be housed in a private room in our dorm facilities with 2 bunk beds. Bathrooms are shared. Every student must attend with a supervising adult. No more than 4 students per adult.

Registration Deadline: All participant paperwork must be received by March 21st, 2007.

Age and Group Size: Teaching groups will be a maximum of 12 with a KSS Field Instructor. Children 10-17 are invited to participate. All students must be accompanied by an adult. Groups and teaching will be tailored to the ages of participants.
