Discovery Camp is Keystone Science School’s flagstone residential camp program. Science, adventure, and fun collide in a traditional camp setting as campers experience hands-on education and build lifelong connections with friends throughout a week filled with challenge hikes, whitewater rafting, team-building activities, and time-honored songs by the evening campfire. Each six-day session incorporates lessons and activities centered around a themed curriculum.
Campers stay in one of our two log-style dormitories. Rives Hall, situated between the two dormitories, serves a dual purpose as a dining hall and meeting space for activities and indoor presentations. We offer astronomy programming in our observatory, and the adjacent yurt, a cozy free-standing round classroom, provides additional space for learning about the wilds of Colorado.
2010's theme is Summer of Magic! This summer we’ll strive for the perfect balance of science, adventure, and fun through thrilling experiences including overnight wilderness camping, enriching discovery hikes, whitewater rafting, campfires, and new friendships.

We strive for the perfect balance of science, adventure, and fun! Featured Discovery Camp activities and educational components include:
6-Day Discovery Camp Session - Sample Schedule
Day 1 - Welcome
Gates open at 1:00 p.m. Campers arrive, settle in, and are introduced to their surroundings, counselors, and cabin-mates. Cabin groups spend the afternoon engaged in icebreakers, name games, and team-building activities that demonstrate the importance of working together. After dinner, campers participate in a very special and entertaining opening campfire that ends with warm, gooey s’mores!
Day 2 - Discover
Campers divide into co-ed Trailgroups to investigate the effects of our sun and its significance in the environment (sol is not a typo - it’s how you say “sun” in Spanish!). They'll also look for wildflowers, small mammals, and signs of the larger wildlife of the Rockies. Later, campers will take part in a fun all-camp evening program, and before bed, they’ll have the option to peek through our 14-inch diameter telescope with its powerful green laser that allows us to “touch” the stars.
Day 3 - Embark
After enjoying a delicious breakfast prepared by our in-house chef, campers prepare for an age-appropriate overnight backpacking wilderness experience, complete with outdoor cooking, evening hikes, exploration of the night environment, and storytelling using the summer constellations.
Day 4 - Adventure
Today is the Challenge Hike: A goal-based hike to a high mountain peak, a majestic alpine lake, or another high-altitude Rocky Mountain glory spot (campers have the choice of a “scenic” or “summit” option). Later, campers will demonstrate their talents and recognize those of others at the Camper Talent Show, where groups and individual campers will put on skits, sing songs, play music, and show off their other unique talents to all of camp.
Day 5 - Splash!
One of the most highly anticipated days of each session, this day sees campers set off on the adventure of a lifetime - riding the “liquid thunder” of the Arkansas River down Class II to Class III sections of water (this is an age-appropriate trip and we monitor water flows careful in order to provide the safest adventure possible for your child). In the evening, campers will participate in a Closing Ceremony that celebrates the past five days of fun, science, and adventure.
Day 6 – So Long!
Campers enjoy a last breakfast before packing and cleaning their cabins. Promptly at 10:00 a.m., parents and campers reunite for fun songs and an epic multimedia slideshow documenting the week, and campers say bittersweet goodbyes to their new friends and counselors.
