Camp Ages:

Our Day Camp program is perfect for campers who aren't quite ready for the overnight camp experience, as well as for visiting and working parents who are looking for enriching daytime activities for their children. Each weekly session runs Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and features a unique theme centered around science, adventure and fun. Campers can attend for a single day, a week at a time, or an entire summer of exploration, hands-on education, creative arts, and lots of new friends. Monday - Welcome Day
Icebreakers, name games, team-building, outdoor adventures.

Tuesday - Discovery Day
Hands-on education, hikes, sight-seeing.

Wednesday - Adventure Day
Off-site adventures, achievable successes, fun challenges.

Thursday -  Imagination Day
Arts and crafts, movie-making, skits and songs, Family Night!

Friday: Camper Choice Day
Campers schedule the day! Hikes, arts and crafts, games, songs, and sports.

Session 1: Camp Castaway - Pirates and Pixies
Price:

A pirate’s life is a wonderful life - a pirate’s life for me!! Swim with sharks, rescue mermaids, walk the plank, and discover the true treasure of summer camp. Pirates and Pixies alike – welcome to the Rocky Mountain high seas of adventure, complete with a sailing adventure, water-based educational activities, and plenty of yo ho ho’s! Ahoy, mates!

SCIENCE: Orienteering, aquatic ecology, bio identification

ADVENTURE: Sailing on Lake Dillon (Summit County) or age-appropriate whitewater rafting (Buena Vista)

FUN: This week counselors go overboard! Meet lots of pirates – good and bad – and even become one yourself. We’ll look for last year’s treasure, bury new treasure, and play fun games like Mermaid Rescue and Capture the Flag!

Session 2: Flower Power Vs. Weed Invaders

NEW THEME! Run to the hills for an enchanting introduction to Colorado’s finest flora and fauna. We’ll identify lots of fantastic flowers, but beware ... close by lurk creepy, invasive weeds. We’ll learn which plants should be in Summit County and which shouldn’t. Join us as we  exploring undiscovered trails, study delicate areas, and become official weed warriors!

SCIENCE: Botany, plant biology, and native plants vs. invasive species

ADVENTURE: Field trip to the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens (Vail)

FUN: When the KSS campus is invaded by horrible weed creatures, we’ll band together to protect our wildflowers with the help of Mother Nature. We’ll also have a special visit from Summit County’s Weed Warriors.

Session 3: Dino Soar! Prehistoric Party

How’s your roar? This special Day Camp session sends campers back in time to explore Colorado’s prehistoric past. We’ll learn about our cavemen ancestors and terrible lizards, and look for clues to determine which creatures used to inhabit the Rocky Mountains. This session might be our Tyrannosaurus best!

SCIENCE: Paleontology, paleoanthropology, paleoastonomy, current endangered species.

ADVENTURE: Field trip to Dinosaur Ridge (Morrison)

FUN: We’ll track a dinosaur that’s loose on the Science School campus & imagine what dino-life was like, plus we’ll have a visit from some close relatives to our favorite terrible lizards.
 

Session 4.1: Wild West Quest

NEW THEME! Hop on your horse and journey back in time to experience the epic history of Summit County. Travel the timeline that carved the high country:  become a miner, a cowboy or cowgirl, and, once again, make the West the best! We’ll ride the historic Georgetown railroad, exploring mining sites, and discover what life was really like in the Wild West. YEE HAW and giddyup!

SCIENCE: Geology, Colorado mining and pioneer history, wilderness etiquette

ADVENTURE: Field trip to Georgetown Loop Railroad (Georgetown); visit to horse stables (Keystone); optional overnight at KSS!

FUN: We’ll have our own gold rush and a Cowboy Carnival!
 

Session 4.2: SPLASH CAMP!

NEW THEME! This session is a Keystone Science School first! Welcome to Splash Camp, a unique partnership between KSS Day Camp & the Silverthorne Recreation Center. If your child wants to get wet, this is their week. We’ll participate in swim lessons, learn about aquatic ecology, and have plenty of slippery adventures! Campers can be dropped off at KSS or Silverthorne Rec Center.

SCIENCE: Aquatic ecology

ADVENTURE: Off-site swim lessons (Silverthorne) and TWO field trips: Pirate's Cove Aquatic Center (Denver), and age-appropriate whitewater rafting (Buena Vista)!

FUN: Water games, swimming, and sports at the rec center.

Session 5: Super Slimy Science

Be warned: this is the most sticky, slimy, ooey-gooey week of camp ever! Welcome to Slime Time, where we'll explore FUN-demental scientific methods, participate in dastardly experiments, paint & create, and lots more! By the end of this week, campers will be really slimy or really sticky (hopefully both). Session includes an experiment each day, hands-on (and hands-IN) science activities, and take-away science lessons that campers can do at home. This session is positively oozing with fun!

SCIENCE: The scientific method, chemistry, investigative techniques

ADVENTURE: Field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science

FUN: Each day we’ll have an “in-your-face” presentation featuring slimy science hypotheses and the methods we take to come to a conclusion. Campers will make slime (and slime some unsuspecting counselors - gross!). We may even see a few mad scientists running around!
 

Session 6: Superhero POWER Week: Robot Rampage: SySTEMs Go!

Something terrible has happened! Keystone Science School has been invaded by robots from the future. How will we stop this menace? Luckily we have plenty of super-campers to save the day! Through the creation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics)-based projects, campers will invent ways to get rid of these rampaging robots. We’ll create our very own superhero personas, meet real superheroes, and embark on adventures that will save the world, creating some amazing inventions along the way. We’ll also study energy:  what it is, where it comes from, and where it goes. Best of all – we’re the only superhero camp that teaches camper how to fly during a special indoor skydiving adventure day. SHAZAM!

SCIENCE: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) principles; scientific invention; mechanics; energy

ADVENTURE: Back by popular demand: Indoor skydiving at SkyVenture! (Denver)

FUN: Campers create their own superheroes and villains. We’ll create comic books, capture the cape, and stop those robot invaders! This week also features a special workshop on machines and mechanics hosted by our friends from the Denver Museum.

 

Session 7: Space Your Face Off !

3... 2... 1... BLAST OFF! Get up close and personal with the cosmos using our solar telescope and state-of-the-art observatory. Campers will travel the galaxy visiting planets & stars, steering through black holes & supernovas, and maybe even meeting some fun creatures from planets far, far away. Key components include flight and rocketry. Campers who choose the overnight option will be treated to an extra-special tour of the night sky. This session will truly be out of this world!

SCIENCE: Astronomy and rocketry

ADVENTURE: Stay tuned… we’re working on something special!

FUN: Campers will investigate a UFO crash site, using scientific investigation to determine what really happened. We’ll make cool hands-on space projects and conceptualize life on other planets. Some of us may even turn out to be aliens ourselves!

Welcome to Keystone Science School's first Dual Language Camp! This Day Camp session combines our traditions of science, adventure, fun with a new component - language. All activities and lessons will incorporate Spanish and English as we explore the natural world around our campus, learn about wildlife, make new friends, and experience unforgettable adventures. Whether you're new to English or Spanish, we guarantee this week will be muy divertido!

Session 8: Snake River Adventures

Get to know one of Keystone Science School’s most treasured resources, the Snake River. Campers will explore and compare different sections of this winding river that cuts through Montezuma, Keystone, and Summit Cove. We will ask important questions: What makes a river healthy? What are macro invertebrates? Why is mud so much fun? Our adventures will peak with a rip-roaring (age-appropriate) whitewater rafting trip, with chances to paddle, splash, and keep an eye out for the slippery creatures that live in the river.

SCIENCE:
Aquatic and riparian ecology, wildlife interpretation, water management

ADVENTURE: Field trip – age-appropriate whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River (Buena Vista)

FUN: Our local rivers offer plenty of opportunities for wet and grimy fun. We’ll explore trails, search for river creatures, and spend lots of time with our hands in the mud! We’ll even do a little face-painting with “natural materials.”
