Ellen joined the staff at The Keystone Center in June 2003 and has served in the role of Science School director since August 2007. She graduated from the University of Colorado where she attained BS degrees in Journalism and Biology and a Master’s degree in Education, with a focus on experiential learning.

Before accepting the position at the Science School, Ellen worked as a Senior Associate in the Professional Education and Leadership division at The Keystone Center.  Her projects included working with NASA to develop curriculum investigating risk and reward and focusing on the Mars Rovers; working with the Department of Energy and NETL on CSI: Climate Status Investigations; and Hands on the Land, a website for public lands education programs.

Prior to her tenure at The Keystone Center, Ellen taught science and math at the Sojourner School, a middle school in Boulder, Colorado. Summers found her outside leading students of all ages on wilderness trips throughout the world. While leading a trip in Australia, she met her husband.  They have two children and enjoy playing in the outdoors at any chance they get.
