Controller

LOCATION:
Keystone, Colorado

SUMMARY:
This is a full-time, year-round position located in the Keystone, Colorado office. The Controller serves as a member of the administrative team and oversees the efficient and timely performance of the accounting department while providing the board of directors and the organization management team with relevant financial data necessary for budgetary and financial decisions. This position is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and finance functions as well as management reporting, financial analysis, general ledger, complete account reconciliations, new system implementations planning and will manage the annual audit. The Controller reports directly to the COO and indirectly to the CEO.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Devises and implements system for general accounting.
  • Establishes, modifies, documents, and coordinates implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures. Develops improved and more efficient methods of operating. Communicates and trains staff on all accounting control changes appropriately.
  • Establishes, or recommends to management, economic policies for the organization.
  • Reviews all financial transactions and reporting.
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts and documenting business transactions.
  • Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and capital and prepares balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports to summarize current and projected company financial position.
  • Analyzes, consolidates, and directs all cost accounting procedures together with other statistical and routine reports.
  • Prepares reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
  • Advises division directors and other senior management on budgeting issues and assumptions, and directs and performs preparation of budgets in collaboration with division directors and staff. Tracks monthly expenses/income to budget. Leads a quarterly “outlook” process.
  • Directs determination of depreciation rates to apply to capital assets.
  • Advises management on desirable operational adjustments due to tax code revisions. Researches developments in tax code and GAAP applicable to the organization and directs implementation of any changes necessary.
  • Arranges for audits of company's accounts. Acts as liaison between auditors and senior management. Works with auditors on ensuring compliance with GAAP and other not for profit accounting principles.
  • Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Assists President in implementing and maintaining banking relationships. Manage banking relationships and analyze current banking developments, making changes in those relationships as necessary. Conduct banking research and analysis ensuring the best banking relationship possible. Manage and implement financing strategy. Maintain excellent reputation in the financial marketplace.
  • Works with members of the Board of Trustees on investment strategy.
  • Arranges and maintains tax exemptions with the State.
  • With COO, assists with all areas of asset management, including purchasing and disposal strategy, maintaining and analyzing contracts and leases, proper depreciation techniques, and ensuring appropriate insurance coverage and premiums on liability and personal property insurance.
  • Leads the financial modeling and analysis to support the development of long term strategic initiatives and business plans.
  • Administration of all corporate credit cards, including enrolling staff and terminating cards.
  • Supports the billing process for invoiced projects as needed. •Maintains a solid understanding of government cost accounting principles and audit issues; directs implementation of proper government contracting directives.
  • Researches and implements developments in accounting principles, business practices, and technology applicable to TKC’s mission and goals.
  • Provide direct assistance to project teams in areas of cash management, budgeting, and reporting to ensure financially successful projects.
  • Prepares and maintains project reports for individual divisions detailing revenues, expenses, allocation, and profit/loss. Reports back to division directors with this information and provides analysis of actual performance to budget.
  • Supports the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors. Acts as liaison between Audit Committee and staff.
  • Assist in re-engineering of financial reporting as the Center moves from 3 divisions to 2.
  • Assists in the design and further development of financial software, including potential implementation of new accounting software.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises one accounting staff person.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
The successful applicant will possess the following (items are required unless otherwise noted):

  • CPA required
  • Previous experience in general ledger accounting required
  • 5+ years of senior-level accounting experience
  • A business or accounting degree
  • Nonprofit experience is essential
  • Experience in accounting/financial software conversions is a strong plus
  • Experience with a variety of computerized financial systems preferred

KSS balances innovation with tradition to provide a unique, customized experience for its clients through both on-site and off-site school programs, summer camp programs, and community programs.  KSS has hosted groups on our historic 23 acre campus for over 33 years providing hands-on inquiry-based science learning opportunities for learners of all ages and backgrounds.  KSS implements a wide variety of cutting-edge curricula in such topic areas as earth science, snow science, forest ecology, aquatic ecology, astronomy, meteorology, Colorado human history, and teambuilding.

POSITION:
KSS Program Instructor

STARTING AND ENDING DATES:

August 13, 2012 – June 7, 2013

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The Program Instructor is responsible for the delivery of a variety of science curricula to both school groups and community members. Sample teaching areas include: earth science, snow science, forest ecology, aquatics ecology, astronomy, weather, Colorado human history, and teambuilding. Program instructors teach both in the field and in a classroom setting. Program duration can be single or multi-day and include outdoor skills such as backpacking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, & whitewater rafting. It is the responsibility of the Program Instructor to maintain safety of the all program participants while teaching educational programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or be working toward a degree in general education, environmental/outdoor education or recreation, science education, parks and recreation, or related fields in ecology or the natural/life sciences. Experience working with youth in the outdoors is required and skills such as backpacking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, whitewater rafting, and snow science is preferred. Previous experience within the field of education is a must and classroom setting is preferred. A good driving record, ability to get a Colorado drivers license and current certification in Wilderness First Aid and CPR is required (WFR preferred but not required). Certified teachers are encouraged to apply.

SALARY:
Starting salary is $1262-1400/month plus with medical/dental benefits, room & board (small monthly fee required), paid vacation, & opportunities for professional development

APPRENTICE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Keystone Science School Program Apprentice is a developmental position with the goal of training future KSS Program Instructors. Program advancement is based on a three tiered system to track apprentice’s growth as outdoor educators throughout the school year. Progression through the tiered process reflects an increase in compensation, time commitment and individual responsibility for programming. The first tier is an introductory phase and focuses on familiarizing the apprentice with KSS curriculum and programs. During this time, apprentices have extensive opportunity for shadowing and observation of KSS programs in the field. The second tier is a Developmental phase during which apprentices practice the teaching and outdoor leadership techniques they have acquired while co-planning and team teaching a wide variety of KSS curricula alongside a field instructor. The final tier, the Practicum phase, requires apprentices to solo plan and teaches any and all KSS curricula as a full time and fully paid outdoor educator. During the Practicum phase, the apprentice may also have an opportunity to be evaluated by field instructors and given feedback to continue developing professionally. Apprentices will spend non teaching time serving a role of ‘support staff.’ Support staff duties can include teaching evening programs, developing & improving curriculum, cleaning & maintenance of KSS facilities & equipment, serving meals, and cleaning dishes.

The Apprenticeship program focuses on the development of apprentices into fully qualified outdoor educators. The program is based on a tiered system with an apprentice’s progress assessed every trimester. In order to continue to the next level of the apprenticeship, the apprentice must complete a defined set of goals and demonstrate an understanding of and ability to fulfill a prescribed amount of KSS program instructor duties. With the conclusion of each phase comes an increase in compensation and weekly time commitment. By the successful completion of the program, each apprentice will be considered a fully qualified program instructor for the following school year. The duties of a full time program instructor include the delivery of a variety of science curricula to both school groups and community members, teaching both in the field and in a classroom setting for programs that can be single or multi-day and include outdoor skills such as backpacking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and fulfilling non teaching related support staff duties such as leading evening programs, meals and general campus upkeep. Apprentices will also work on a long term project which addresses additional goals of the apprentice. The project is created by the apprentice and assistant director to aid in the apprentice’s development towards becoming a full time instructor and is placed in their portfolio.

Tier Progression
In order to complete each tier the apprentice will have completed and demonstrated competence for each of the following goals. Apprentices will be assessed for tier advancement at the end of each trimester.

Tier 1
Introduction: (30 hr/wk) $250/month

  • Participate in all staff training (40+ hr/wk)
  • Shadow and observe a wide variety of KSS programs and field days lead by field instructors and engage in extensive debriefs with the observed instructors to better understand how to lead successful programs.
  • Develop and begin work on a long term project
  • Solo teach non field based KSS programs (evening programs, meals, school group orientations and other large group activities)
  • Begin to team teach in-field activities under field instructor guidance
  • Develop knowledge of KSS fall/spring curriculum

Tier 2
Developmental: (35 hr/wk) $450/month

  • Team teach a wide variety of curriculum co-planned with Program Instructor
  • Lead any non-field based KSS program (EP, LGO, Meals)
  • Work on/complete long term apprentice project
  • Develop knowledge of all KSS curriculum (including winter specifics)
  • Develop a wide base of KSS program knowledge i.e. school programs, summer camp, outreach

Tier 3
Practicum: (40 hr/wk) $1000/month

  • Solo teach all curriculum
  • Receive formal evaluations from KSS field instructors and set continuing developmental goals
  • Present long term apprentice project to KSS Faculty
  • Have extensive knowledge of all KSS programs
  • Act as lead instructor for at least 1 School group

Tiers are assessed every trimester.
